Salud

La salud en Kenia y, en especial en sus zonas rurales, es un tema muy preocupante. Por un lado, el índice de infectados por VIH/SIDA en Tsunza es del 33%, las infraestructuras sanitarias son escasas, precarias o inaccesibles. Los hospitales públicos son de difícil acceso, tanto por su  lejanía, como por el desbordante número de pacientes que un solo doctor debe atender. Por ello, abordamos el problema con varios proyectos con los que estamos absolutamente comprometidos:

• TSUNZA MEDICAL CLINIC

Tsunza Medical Clinic es un centro médico del poblado de Tsunza cuya construcción y equipamiento Children of Africa ayudó a financiar con la colaboración de la asociación italiana Maisha Safi.
La construcción se inició en 2011 y en 2013 se inauguró y abrió puertas al público. Desde entonces, Children of Africa ha seguido ofreciendo apoyo al centro para ayudar a mejorar sus servicios, instalaciones y equipamientos.
Cada año, el grupo de voluntarios echa una mano con la renovación y pintura. Además, se han ido ampliando sus instalaciones con nuevas salas, camas de maternidad, frigorífico para medicinas, ayuda con los salarios de los trabajadores, adquisición de medicinas, etc.
Además, varias veces al año, Children of Africa ayuda a organizar diversos talleres y seminarios sobre la prevención del cáncer, epilepsia, maternidad, primeros auxilios, covid, etc. También se financian varios campamentos médicos, durante los cuales se ofrece asistencia médica y medicamentos gratuitamente a toda la población que lo necesita durante un día entero o varios.
Desde 2019, el día 5 de cada mes, ofrece un programa de vacunación gratuito para todos los niños menores de 5 años.

• PROYECTO DE PREVENCIÓN DE SIDA

En 2011 se inició también el proyecto Tsunza for Life, organizado por la socióloga Anna Planas, de Barcelona. Un concurso de representaciones teatrales y poesía, por un lado, y concurso de arte, por otro, en el que se animaba a los alumnos de Tsunza Primary School a representar poesías y diseñar carteles relacionados con la prevención del SIDA.

También se organizó un liga de fútbol para atraer a más público y promover la sensibilidad. Los ganadores fueron obsequiados con material escolar, medallas, diplomas, trofeos y la escuela recibió material escolar previamente solicitado.

En 2012 el proyecto tuvo su continuidad y expansión con el proyecto Lutsangani for Life, también organizado por la misma Anna Planas. Esta vez contó con la participación de las tres escuelas del condado (Tsunza, Lutsangani y Dzivani) y movilizó a mucha mas gente, que pudieron aprender con las charlas preventivas ofrecidas por adolescentes de la zona (previamente preparados y formados por Anna Planas), las actividades, las representaciones teatrales y la festividad de la jornada.

Para 2013 ya se está empezando a organizar y preparar el nuevo proyecto Dzivani for Life, que dará continuidad a los dos anteriores, pero esta vez en el poblado de Dzivani.

• CAMPAMENTOS MÉDICOS

En 2010 se organizó el primer Medical Camp en el poblado de Tsunza, en el cual contamos con la ayuda del Doctor Joseph Ndiba, del dispensario médico de Lutsangani (el pueblo vecino), que se desplazó hasta Tsunza durante un día entero para atender a más de 170 personas.

Se examinó a los aldeanos, se hicieron análisis de sangre y se entregaron medicinas gratuitamente a aquellos a quienes el doctor había recetado alguna cosa.

En 2012 una familia de Llica d’Amunt, Barcelona, pasó tres días en Tsunza y, gracias a un evento benéfico que realizaron en el instituto donde trabajaban, organizaron con el mismo doctor un nuevo campamento médico que tuvo lugar en el recién construido dispensario de Tsunza, que pudo dar asistencia sanitaria y medicinas a 270 personas.

• OTROS

El hospital del distrito de Kinango con frecuencia hace donaciones a la Asociación de telas mosquiteras que se reparten a madres con hijos menores de 5 años. Cada verano se organizan seminarios y charlas en la biblioteca de Tsunza que tratan temas tan básicos y esenciales como la salud, la higiene y la educación sexual. Además se han cubierto gastos hospitalarios, operaciones quirúrgicas, se han ofrecido curas de primeros auxilios y donaciones de medicinas a poblados y al dispensario de Lutsangani.

Health is a very worrying topic in Kenya, and especially in rural areas. On the one hand, the rate of HIV/AIDS infected people is very high (getting almost to 30% in Kinango district); infrastructures are scarce, precarious or unaccessible. Public hospitals are far and few and are overloaded with too many patients for the same doctor. That’s the reason why Children of Africa got involved by means of several projects:

• TSUNZA MEDICAL CLINIC

Tsunza Medical Clinic is a medical center in the town of Tsunza whose construction and equipment Children of Africa helped finance with the collaboration of the Italian association Maisha Safi.
Construction began in 2011 and in 2013 it was inaugurated and opened its doors to the public. Since then, Children of Africa has continued to offer support to the center to help improve its services, facilities and equipment.
Each year, the group of volunteers lends a hand with the renovation and painting. In addition, their facilities have been expanded with new rooms, maternity beds, a refrigerator for medicines, help with workers’ salaries, acquisition of medicines, etc.
Additionally, several times a year, Children of Africa helps organize various workshops and seminars on cancer prevention, epilepsy, motherhood, first aid, covid, etc. Several medical camps are also financed, during which medical assistance and medicines are offered free of charge to the entire population in need for an entire day or several.
Since 2019, on the 5th of each month, it offers a free vaccination program for all children under 5 years of age.

• AIDS PREVENTION PROJECTS

In 2011 Tsunza for Life Project also got started, organised bythe sociologist Anna Planas, from Barcelona. It consists of an art and poetry performance contest, where the students from Tsunza Primary were encouraged to prepare and represent poems or design posters with the main topic of AIDS prevention.

A football league also took place with the same purpose, but with the idea of attracting more public and raise their awarness on the topic. The winner were awarded with school material, medals, diplomas, tropheys and more material for the school.

In 2012, once seen the success,  the project got expanded and contunued under the name of Lutsangani for Life Project, also organised by Anna Planas. On this ocasion, the three schools of the area got involved (Tsunza, Lutsangani and Dzivani) and the project mobilised more people, who could get all kinds of information about AIDS prevention with the preventive speeches that some teenagers prepared with Anna Planas, and offered in Lutsangani School during the whole morning. Everybody could also enjoy with the games and activities organised by the volunteers, the theatre performances and the joy of the day.

For 2013 the Association is already preparing and organising the third version of this project,which this time will take place in Dzivani, and therefore, it will be called Dzivani for Life.

• MEDICAL CAMPS

In 2010 the first Medical Camp was organised in Tsunza by Donatella Tarasco, with the help of Doctor Joseph from Lutsangani Dispensary (neighbouring village), who came to Tsunza for the whole day and examined more than 170 people.

Apart from examining, he also took some blood tests and provided free medicines to the patients who needed them.

In 2012 a family from Llica d’Amunt, Barcelona, spent three days in Tsunza and, thanks to a fundraising event that they organised in the the highschool where they work, they could make it to call Doctor Joseph again for him to come to Tsunza and have a second Medical Camp in the new dispensary. This time he made it to examine and give medicine to more than 270 people. 

• OTHERS

The district hospital of Kinango often donates of mosquito nets to the Association, whose volunteers distribute them among mothers with children under 5 years old.  Every summer several seminars and speeches are organised in Tsunza library, and the main topics are health, hygiene, and sexual education. Finally, many hospital expenses, surgical operations, and tests have been covered, apart from offering first aid help and medicines to all the rural villages around.
